Question

square root of 2 x plus 6 end root plus 4 equals x plus 3
What is the solution set of the equation above?

  1. {−1}
  2. {5}
  3. {−1, 5}
  4. {0, −1, 5}

The correct answer is: {5}

    Given square root of 2 x plus 6 end root plus 4 equals x plus 3
    square root of 2 x plus 6 end root equals x plus 3 minus 4
    square root of 2 x plus 6 end root equals x minus 1
    2x + 6 = (x -1)2
    2x + 6 = x2 – 2x + 1
    x2 – 2x + 1 – 2x – 6 = 0
    x2 – 4x – 5 = 0
    x2 – 5x + x – 5 = 0
    x(x - 5) + 1 ((x - 5) = 0
    (x - 5)(x + 1) = 0
    x + 1 = 0 and x – 5 = 0
    x = -1 and x = 5.
