Question

If the energy available to the plants from the sun is 20,000 J. What would be the energy available to the lion in the following food chain? Planta rightwards arrowDeer rightwards arrowLion.

  1. 20J
  2. 2000J
  3. 200J
  4. 20000J

Hint:

10 per cent Law introduced by Lindeman states that only 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to another.

The correct answer is: 200J

According to the 10% Law, Plants have 20,000 J energy available.
    Plants transferred their 10% energy to deer i.e. 20,000 * 10/100 = 2000 J
The deer received 2000 J energy from the plants and now it transfers 10% energy of itself to the lion.
    2000 ×10/100= 200 J
Hence, lions will have 200 J energy from deer.
