Question

Solve x − 11 = 2x + 9. Write a reason for each step.

hintHint:

using the additive property and subtraction property ,division property on both sides .solve for x.

The correct answer is: x = - 20

    Ans:- x = - 20
    Given , x − 11 = 2x + 9.
    Adding 11 on both sides by additive property of equality both sides remain equal.
    x – 11 + 11 = 2x + 9 + 11
    x = 2x + 20
    Subtract 2x from both sides by subtraction property of equality both sides remains equal.
    x - 2x = 2x + 20 - 2x
    - x = 20
    Dividing -1 left parenthesis not equal to 0 right parenthesis  by division property of equality both sides remains equal.
    fraction numerator negative x over denominator negative 1 end fraction equals fraction numerator negative 20 over denominator left parenthesis negative 1 space right parenthesis end fraction

    ∴  x  = - 20
