Question

State whether the lines l and m are parallel or not. Explain your answer.

The correct answer is: No, lines l & m are not parallel to each other

    "Hint:-
    1. Parallel lines- 2 co-planar lines that are equidistant from each other are called Parallel lines. Parallel lines never intersect each other.
    2. Transversal- A line that crosses 2 co-planar lines at 2 distinct points is called a transversal.
    3. Interior angles on the same side of the transversal- angles that are interior to the parallel lines and on the same side of the transversal are called Interior angles on the same side of the transversal.
    4. When 2 parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, Interior angles on the same side of the transversal are supplementary i.e. the sum of these 2 angles is 180°.

    "Step-by-step solution:-
From the given diagram, we observe that the 2 angles, interior to line l and m and on the same side of the transversal (Left side) are-
    50° and 125°.
We know that sum of interior angles = 180° when the 2 lines on which such angles are formed are parallel.
    When added, we get the sum of two Interior angles = 50 + 125 = 175° ≠ 180°
Hence, lines l & m are not parallel to each other.
    "Final Answer:-
∴ No, lines l & m are not parallel to each other.
