The Cross section of a water tank which is in the shape of rectangle with dimensions 12mx7m having semi circle at one end. If the water is 2m deep , Calculate the volume of water in the tank in litres ?

    From the given information, we get-
    For the rectangular portion-
    • Length of the rectangular part of the tank = 12 m
    • Width of the rectangular part of the tank = 7m
    For the semi-circle portion-


    Diameter of the semicircle = width of the rectangle ........................... (Refer adjacent diagram)
    ∴ Diameter of the semicircle = 7m
    ∴ Radius of the semicircle = 7/2 ....................... (Radius = Diameter/2) ....................... (Equation i)
    To calculate Volume of water, we first calculate the surface area of the entire tank-
    Surface area of the tank = Surface area of the rectangular portion + Surface area of the semicircle portion
    ∴ Surface area of the tank = (length cross times breadth) + 1 half pi r squared.
    ∴ Surface area of the tank = (12 cross times 7) + [1 half cross times 22 over 7 cross times open parentheses 3.5 close parentheses squared] ............................................ (From given information & Equation i)
    ∴ Surface area of the tank = (84) + (1 half cross times 22 over 7 cross times 12.25)
    ∴ Surface area of the tank = 84 + 19.25
    ∴ Surface area of the tank = 103.25 m squared ........................................................................... (Equation ii)
    Volume of water in the tank = Surface Area of the tank cross times depth of water
    ∴ Volume of water in the tank = 103.25 cross times2
    ∴ Volume of water in the tank = 206.5 m cubed.
    ∴ Volume of water in the tank = 2,06,500 L.
    ∴ Volume of water in the tank is 2,06,500 litres.
