Question
Use the Law of Syllogism to write a new conditional statement that follows from the pair of true statements.
Hint:
Law of Syllogism states that:
then we can conclude that p r is also true.
The correct answer is: Hence, the new conditional statement is “If 𝑥 > 10, then 𝑥2 > 64”.
It is given that: If 𝑥2 > 100,then 𝑥2 > 64 and If 𝑥 > 10, then 𝑥2 > 100. So if we take
p = 𝑥 > 10
p = 𝑥 > 10
r = 𝑥2 > 64
So can write the given statement “If 𝑥 > 10, then 𝑥2 > 100” as p q and the statement “If 𝑥2 >
100, then 𝑥2 > 64” can be written as q r.
So, we can conclude that p r which means that If 𝑥 > 10, then 𝑥2 > 64.
Final Answer:
Hence, the new conditional statement is “If 𝑥 > 10, then 𝑥2 > 64”.
