Question

Write a function in the form Y = mx + b for the line that contains the points (-8.3, -5.2) and (6.4, 9.5)

hintHint:

Use two – point form

The correct answer is: y = x + 3.1

    The two points given are (- 8.3 , - 5.2) and (6.4 , 9.5)
    Using two – point form, equation of the line is
    (y – y1) = m (x – x1)  where  m = fraction numerator y subscript 2 minus y subscript 1 over denominator x subscript 2 minus x subscript 1 end fraction

    rightwards double arrow m =  fraction numerator 9.5 minus left parenthesis negative 5.2 right parenthesis over denominator 6.4 minus left parenthesis negative 8.3 right parenthesis end fraction

             = fraction numerator 14.7 over denominator 14.7 end fraction  =  1
    Now,  equation of the line is (y – y1) = m (x – x1)
    (y – 9.5) = 1 (x – 6.4)
    y – 9.5  =  x – 6.4
    y =  x – 6.4 + 9.5
    y = x + 3.1
