Santa Clara is a private university in California, USA. Founded in 1851, it is the oldest higher educational institution in California. The university is religiously affiliated with the Roman Catholic Tradition(especially the Jesuits). 

‘Universitas Santae Clarae’ is its Latin name, and ‘Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam’(For the Greater Glory of the God) remains its motto.

The first institution of USC remains Santa Clara College which in 1912 became Santa Clara University. In the same year, the School of Engineering and School of Law joined its league, and the University of Santa Clara renamed itself ‘Santa Clara University. 

Santa Clara College awarded  California’s first bachelor’s degree to Thomas I. Santa Clara became the first  Catholic university in California in  1961 to be open to both men and women. It remains a private university managed by a Board of Trustees with 44 members.
