Based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the University of Calgary was founded 1944 as Calgary branch of the University of Alberta. Later year 1966, the University of Calgary finds itself as an independent body of autonomous public research universities. The University of Calgary has 14 faculties, 85 research centres and other educational institutes.

In 1966, the University of Calgary had nearly 4,000 students; in 2022, it had more than 33,000 students on five full-fledged campuses sprawling across the city. The University of Calgary has inked growth in leaps and bounds, as its main campus covers an area of 200 hectares, or 490 acres. 


University of Calgary – An Overview

The Northwest quadrant of the city, nearer to the Bow River, houses the main campus of the University of Calgary. In contrast, in the city centre, you will find the smaller south campus of the university. The main campus is mainly filled with research centres that work with government research bodies and regulatory agencies. Most government bodies are next to the main campus, like the Geological Survey of Canada.

The university is stretched into five campuses, four located within the boundaries of Calgary, and the fifth is in Doha, Qatar. Of 14 faculties, 11 faculties are hosted by the main campus within the University of Calgary. The Foothill campus executes the education of medicine related to the Cumming School of Medicine and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, whereas the Spy hill campus teaches clinical and diagnostic learning. On the Downtown campus, students can opt for graduate-level courses and programs at the Haskayne School of Business and School of Public Policy. At the Doha campus, students can learn about nursing programs. 

Apart from all these campuses, the University of Calgary owns and provides research-based institutions like field stations, astrophysical observations, a marine institute and a high Arctic research site. This university offers 250+ courses in different academic fields like arts, science, and humanities, engineering management, biology, etc.

Even though the university is composed of more than 300 Indian contingents, they from their own association within the university known as the Indian Students Association, which is the acting ambassador to Indian Culture at the University of Calgary.

Compared to the acceptance rate for undergraduate programs, the graduate programs’ acceptance rate is relatively high, up to 63%. The University of Calgary has made it relatively easy for students to pursue a master’s degree.  


Even in MBA programs, the University of Calgary offers a 60% acceptance rate, which is very helpful for students seeking admission to the institution. At the University of Calgary, the MBA programs are divided into shifts – daytime and evening. The Global Green MBA has acknowledged this university MBA program as 4th in the world in the event Corporate Knights held in 2013.   

University of Calgary Admission Requirements 

    • In the U.G. program, students need to have at least 80% marks in the respective subject in which students wish to pursue a course.
    • Documents or mark sheets  from high school and above, along with having previously attained a degree or diploma course. 
    • For master’s and MBA programs, students must submit their GMAT or GRE scores.
    • Letter of recommendation 
    • Statement of Purpose (SOP)
    • English Proficiency test scores in IELTS, TOEFL and C1 Advanced.
    • Bank statements and proof of sufficient funds to sponsor the student.

University of Calgary Rankings 

The University of Calgary was ranked 151-200 globally and 6-9 within Canada among other native competing universities by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking) in 2020. On the other hand, the Q.S. world ranking, which has always given weightage to the academic reputation of the educational institution, has ranked the University of Calgary 246th internationally and 9th nationally for the year 2021. 

They are followed by the 200th position globally and the 8th position in Canada for 2021 by Times Higher Education. U.S. News and World Report have given 174h places to the University of Calgary globally and 7th  in Canada.
