Question

Calculate the volume of the metal pipe whose inside diameter is 6 cm and whose outside diameter is 8 cm, if it is 20 cm long.

hintHint:

A pipe is typical hollow cylinder shaped. Subtracting the volume with inside diameter from the volume with outside diameter, we will get the volume of metal.

The correct answer is: The volume of metal is 440 cm3.

    Explanations:
    Step 1 of 2:
    Inside diameter = 6 cm; therefore, inside radius, r  = 6/2 = 3 cm
    Outside diameter = 8 cm; therefore, outside radius, R = 8/2 = 4 cm
The length of the pipe is, h = 20 cm
Volume with inside radius =pi r squared h equals pi 3 squared cross times 20 cm3
Volume with outside radius =  pi R squared h equals pi 4 squared cross times 20 cm3
    Step 2 of 2:
Volume of metal = volume with outside radius – volume with inside radius
equals pi h open parentheses R squared minus r squared close parentheses
equals 22 over 7 cross times 20 left parenthesis 4 plus 3 right parenthesis left parenthesis 4 minus 3 right parenthesis
    equals 22 over 7 cross times 20 cross times 7 cross times 1 cm3
    equals 440 cm cubed
    Final Answer:
The volume of metal is 440 cm3.
