In DABC, AD is the median through A and E is the produced meets in F figure. Then the value of AF is equal to

  1. 1/4AC    
  2. 1/2AC    
  3. 1/3AC    
  4. 2/3AC.    

The correct answer is: 1/3AC


    We should find value of AF in terms of AC
    In ΔADG
     E is the midpoint of AD and EFDG
    By converse of midpoint theorem we have
    F is midpoint of AG and AF=FG  ..............1
     
    Similarly, in ΔBCF
    D is the midpoint of BC and DGBF   
    G is midpoint of CF and FG=GC ..............2
     
    From equations 1 and 2
    we will get
    AF=FG=GC........3
    AF+FG+GC=AC
    AF+AF+AF=AC  ......... from eq 3
    AF=AC
    AF=(1/3)AC

    Hence AF=(1/3)AC
