Question

A class plants a tree. Sketch the graph of the height of the tree over time. Identify the two variables ?
Describe the relationship between the two variables ?
Sketch the graph.

hintHint:

Notice two points i.e., ordered pairs in the figure given.

The correct answer is: 3y – 4x = 9

SOL – Time taken by tree to grow = x years
Height of the tree = y feet
    Acc. to the question, x = 0 , y = 3 and x = 3 , y = 7
Using two – point form, the equation of the line is
    (y – y1) = m (x – x1) where m = fraction numerator y subscript 2 minus y subscript 1 over denominator x subscript 2 minus x subscript 1 end fraction
    Slope, m = fraction numerator y subscript 2 minus y subscript 1 over denominator x subscript 2 minus x subscript 1 end fraction

    = fraction numerator 7 minus 3 over denominator 3 minus 0 end fraction = 4 over 3
    Equation of line is (y – 3) =  (x – 0)
    not stretchy rightwards double arrow y – 3 =  x
    not stretchy rightwards double arrow 3y – 9 = 4x

not stretchy rightwards double arrow 3y – 4x = 9 which is a linear function.
Hence, the two variables namely x and y have a linear relationship. In other words, it’s a straight – line relationship between the two variables.
