Question

If 27x+1 = 9x+3 = 3y, find the values of x and y.

hintHint:

In Mathematics, lets say, "a" represents a number and "n" is the number of times that number is to be multiplied with itself, in order to get a desired result. Then, such result can be written as an, where a is called the base and n is its power/ exponent.
an = a × a × ... × a          n times.

The correct answer is: For the given equation, x = 3 & y = 12.

    Step-by-step solution:-
    27x+1 = 9x+3 = 3y
    ∴ (33)x+1 = (32)x+3 = 3y
    ∴ 33x+3 = 32x+6 = 3y .....................…................ [(bn)m = bnm]
    ∴ 3x+3 = 2x+6 = y …............................ (Exponents of the same base in an equation are equal) .................... (Equation i)
Now, From Equation i, we get-
    ∴ 3x + 3 = 2x+6
    ∴ 3x - 2x = 6 - 3
    ∴ x = 3 ......................... (Equation ii)
Substituting Equation ii in Equation i, we get-
    2x + 6 = y
    ∴ 2(3) + 6 = y
    ∴ 6 + 6 = y
    ∴ y =12
    Final Answer:-
    ∴ For the given equation, x = 3 & y = 12.
