Question

# Calculate the distance between points (- 7, 8) and (2, 8)?

## 4 units    5 units    3 units    9 units Hint:

## The correct answer is: 9 units

### The given points are (-7,8) and (2,8)If we see, they have the same y coordinate. And their x coordinate has opposite signs. It means they are in adjacent quadrants. We will find the absolute values of both the points. Absolute value means their distance from the respective axis. It is always positive. Here we will be counting the distance from the y axis as it’s y component is same. The absolute value of the point (-7,8) = |-7|The absolute value of the point (2,8) = |2|Now, to find the distance between the points in adjacent quadrants we will add the absolute valuesSo distant = |-7| + |2|= 7 + 2= 9Therefore, the distance between the two order pairs is 9 units.

For such questions, we have to see if the points of the rectangle are in same quadrant or adjacent quadrants. We can use distance formula to find the length of sides of rectangle too.
