- Yes
- No
Hint:
In deductive reasoning we use facts, definitions and postulates to draw a conclusion. There are two laws under deductive reasoning they are Law of Detachment and Law of Syllogism. Here, we have to determine whether the conclusion is correct or not.
The correct answer is: Yes
In the question the given statements are,
1. If the binding of the book is broken, then the student will have to pay for a new one.
2. Michael has to pay for a new book.
3. So, he concludes the binding on his book is broken.
Here, we have to find whether the given conclusion is correct or not.
Let statement (1) be p, statement (2) be q and statement (3) be r.
From the given statements we can say that,
Michael has to pay for a new book because he has broken the binding of the book which means r is the conclusion of p and q.
So, the conclusion is correct.
In Law of Syllogism if a statement p equals q and if q equals r, then p equals r whereas in Law of Detachment if a statement p equals q where p is true then q is also true.
