Question
Match the function f(x) = - 3x -5 to the graph
Hint:
1. Equation of a line, when its slope and intercept is given can be given as- y = mx + b, where m = slope and b = y-intercept. 2. Negative slope represents a line that moves downwards from left to right and positive slope represents a line that moves upwards from left to right. 3. Y-intercepts refers to the value of y-coordinate on a line when x = 0.
The correct answer is:
GIVEN- f(x) = - 3x - 5 TO FIND- Graph of the given function from the given options. SOLUTION- Comparing the given function i.e. f(x) = - 3x -5 with y = mx + b, we get- Slope = m = -3 and y-intercept = -5. Now, since the slope of the given function is negative, the line should move downwards from left to right. Hence, options a and d are eliminated as they are moving upwards from left to right. Also, y-intercept for the given function = -5 i.e. it passes through point (0,-5). Hence, option b is also eliminated. FINAL ANSWER- Option 'c' is the correct answer to the given question.
