Question

A tyre containing 10 moles of air and occupying a volume of 40L and due to the puncture losses half of its volume. Considering that the pressure and temperature stay constant, calculate the amount of air in the deflated tyre.

  1. 10 moles
  2. 15 moles
  3. 12 moles
  4. 5 moles

hintHint:

The Avogadro law is used to measure the pressure or the volume of gas that exists in a vessel.

The correct answer is: 5 moles

    Given,
    The initial amount of air (n1) = 10 mol
    The initial volume of the tyre (V1) = 40 L
    The final volume of the tyre (V2) = 20 L
    According to Avogadro’s law, the final amount of air in the tyre
    n2 = V2n1/V1 = 20/40 x 10 = 1/2 x 10 = 5 moles.
    The deflated tyre would contain 5 moles of air.
