# Types of Motion: Definition and Examples

#### Introduction:

We see a lot of objects around us in our daily lives in various places such as our house, the playground, the jungle, the garden, and the school. Among those objects, some seem to be fixed at particular places and others are not. The moving objects move in many different ways. Some move fast and some slow. Objects can also be moving in different kinds of paths. We shall categorize the motions done by objects into various categories in this session.

## Motion:

The pictures above show the crawling ants, the cycling people, the swimming ducks, the running people, and the water falling in Niagara Falls. All the pictures show objects that are moving. The position of all these objects changes with time. Therefore, they are said to be in motion. Thus, an object is said to be in motion if its position changes with time.

## Types of Motion:

Motions can be categorized into many different types based on the pattern or the type of path the moving objects take. These are as follows:

1. Linear motion: A motion is said to be linear if it takes place in a straight line.

2. Circular motion: A motion is said to be circular if it takes place in a circular path.

3. Rotatory motion: A motion is said to be rotatory if the object spins about a fixed axis passing through it.

4. Periodic motion: A motion is said to be periodic if it repeats itself after fixed time intervals.

5. Random motion: A motion is said to be random if there is no specific pattern of motion.

The spinning of the Earth about its axis is rotatory and periodic at the same time.

It is periodic as it rotates again and again after equal amounts of time.

#### Summary

Motion can be of the following types:

1. Linear motion: Motion in a straight line.
2. Circular motion: Motion in a circular path.
3. Rotatory motion: Motion about an axis.
4. Periodic motion: Motion that repeats itself after a certain time.
5. Random motion: Motion that has no specific pattern.
