Courtesy means good manners or politeness. 

Courtesy words are used to speak politely to others. 

The different courtesy words are: 

  • Please 
  • Thank you 
  • Welcome 
  • Excuse me 
  • Sorry 
  • May I 

Please 

“Please” should be used whenever you ask someone for something. 

It is used when you make a request. 

Thank you 

When someone gives you a gift or does something nice for you, you should say “thank you.”

Welcome 

When someone says “thank you” you should reply them as “You are welcome.” 

Excuse Me 

“Excuse Me” is used when you are asking forgiveness for disturbing something that you are engaged in such as leaving a table, sneezing, coughing etc.  

Sorry 

“Sorry” or “I’m sorry” is used when  

  • You have made a mistake. 
  • Hurt someone’s feelings. 
  • You did something that you should not have done. 

May I 

“May I” is similar to “excuse me.” 

It is used for asking permission for doing a task or to interrupt.
