Writing an Article: Structure and Essential Tips

What is an article?

  • An article is written to share information, comment, or give an opinion about any topic.
  • Formal or informal writing styles can be used for article writing.
  • The written articles are published in newspapers, magazines, or blogs.
  • The main purpose is to engage the reader and keep their interest until the very end.

Structure of Article Writing :

Title :

Draw the attention of readers with an attractive title and indicate the main topic of the article

Introduction :

Attract the reader’s attention with a sentence that gives a general presentation of the topic.

Main Body :

  • The body of the article is where most of the research and content is located.
  • It should be divided into sections based on the author’s primary points.
  • Each section should contain one or more paragraphs and each paragraph should begin and end with sentences.

Between these sentences, the body should do the following:

  • Introduce the support for the author’s argument.
  • Demonstrate how the support is relevant to the topic.
  • Provide research and citations that outline the support.

The body should as a whole, flow well from the beginning of the article to its conclusion with which the author will get a good grasp on the topic being discussed.

Five Hints to Write a Good Article:

  1. Keep in mind where the article will appear: A newspaper, magazine, blog, or website.
  2. Who is the target group?
  3. What is the purpose of the article?
  4. Organize your ideas carefully in paragraphs. Each paragraph should provide a clear topic sentence.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Does it call the attention of the reader?
  • Are the topic sentences in the body paragraph interesting?
  • Is it easy to read?
  • Has it got a good ending?

Why Should You Give Your Article a Title?

  1. It tells the reader what they are going to read.
  2. It reminds you to keep your focus.
  3. It looks good!  
  4. Articles are ways of presenting information about a topic which gives an insight to the reader what the writer is trying to tell in a way that is understandable to all the readers.
