  • Writing is viewed as one of the most difficult skills. It requires numerous skills ranging from spelling, pronunciation and word choice to highly complex skills such as planning and structuring a text and generating and organizing ideas.
  • Mechanics of writing specifies the conventions to be followed while writing. These conventions include capitalization, contractions, gerunds, participles, numbers, numerals, pronouns, technical abbreviations, acronyms, units of measurement, and punctuation marks.
  • Punctuation marks are one of the components of writing mechanics.
  • Punctuation marks are divided into:
    • Internal marks referring to the punctuation marks within the sentence. [commas, semicolons, dashes]
    • End marks which are used at the end of a sentence or a question. [The period, exclamation, or question mark]
    • Patterns within the word, like apostrophes and hyphens, marks between words and end marks.
  • A contraction is a shortened form of a group of words.
  • A contraction is a combination of two or more words.
  • Capitalization: Capitalize the following items-
    • Proper nouns
    • The letters of many abbreviations and acronyms.
    • The first letter of the first word is in numbered or bulleted lists.

  • An abbreviation is a quick way of writing a word or a phrase that could be written out in full.
  • Abbreviations must be clearly distinguished from contractions.
  • Spelling is the writing of a word or words with all necessary letters and diacritics present in an accepted, conventional order.
  • It is one of the elements of orthography and a prescriptive element of language.
  • Spelling is one tool that facilitates the effective communication of the writer’s message.
  • Spelling patterns accurately include prefixes, suffixes, contractions, compounds, possessives, homonyms, and inflectional endings in writing.
