  • A noun is a naming word used as the name of a person, place or thing. 
  • Common Noun: A noun refers to a person, place, or thing in general.  
  • The class is studying grammar. 
  • The rich should care for the poor. 
  • The boy is running on a street. 

Proper Noun

It represents the name of a specific person, place, or thing.  

Proper nouns are always written with a capital letter at the beginning. 

Proper Common 

Mt. Everest a mountain 

Asia a continent 

Oxford School a high school

  • The most common proper nouns are names, as of people, places, or events. 
  • Names 
  • Brands 
  • Job Titles and Familial Roles 

General Rules 

“the” is not used with names of people. 

  • Abraham Lincoln 
  • Bill Gates 
  • Steve Jobs 

Do not use “the” with names of companies. [ Except If the full (registered) name of a company starts with “The”] 

  • Google 
  • Amazon 
  • Turito 

“the” is not used with names of places 

  • London 
  • New York 
  • Mumbai 

“the” is not used with “Lake/Mount + Name” 

  • Everest 
  • Lake Victoria 
  • Lake Vostok 

Use “the” for names of canals, rivers, seas and oceans 

  • The Nile River 
  • The Yellow River 
  • The Pacific Ocean
