Introduction 

1 red balloon and 9 blue balloons. How many in all?

The parts are 1 and 9 

The parts are 1 and 9

Now we will add the parts to give the whole, again the whole is an addition

The addition equation is 1 + 9 = 10

So, there are 10 balloons in all.  

Examples 

Example 1: 

2 green ice creams and 6 yellow ice creams. How many in all? 

The parts are 2 and 6

The parts are 2 and 6 

parallel

Now we will add the parts to get the whole, again the whole is an addition  

The addition equation is 2 + 6 = 8 

So, there are 8 ice creams in all.  

Higher – Order Thinking 

2 apples, 6 oranges, 2 kiwis, and 5 bananas. How many fruits in all? 

Draw the picture and write the addition equation.  

Solution: 







2 + 6 + 2 + 5 = 15

1. 3 pink flowers and 6 orange flowers. How many in all?

2. 4 red rabbits and 4 yellow rabbits. How many in all?

3. 2 lions and 4 tigers. How many animals in all?

4. 8 apples and 4 mangoes. How many fruits in all?

5. 4 glasses and 5 boxes. How many in all?

6. 5 umbrellas and 2 hoodies. How many in all?

7. 2 pineapples and 4 burgers. How many animals in all?

8. 3 giraffe toys and 2 plush toys. How many in all?

9. 3 giraffes and 5 frogs. How many in all?

10. 6 blue birds and 2 yellow birds. How many in all?
