Key Concepts

  • Compare situations.
  • Word problems on comparing situations.

Introduction:

There are eight birds on a tree.

3 birds flew away.

How many birds are left on the tree?

Use cubes to find.

8 is whole.

parallel

Now we need to take 3 from 8.

Subtract 3 from 8, we get

8 – 3 = ____

Now write the difference between the numbers.

Subtraction equation is

parallel

8 – 3 = 5

There are 5 birds left on the tree.

There are 10 books in a bag.

4 books are taken out.

How many books are left in the bag?

Use cubes to find.

10 is whole.

Now we need to take 4 from 10

Subtract 4 from 10, we get

10 – 4 = ____

Now write the difference between the numbers.

Subtraction equation is

10 – 4 = 6

There are 6 books left in the bag.

Take from Real Life:

Check Our Understanding:

  1. There are 6 apples on the tree. 4 apples have fallen on the ground. How many apples are left on the tree?
    Answer:
    6 – 4 = 2
  1. Observe the picture and find the number of birds flying away if there are 8 birds at first.

Answer:
8 – __ = 6
8 – 6 = 2

  1. There are 7 fish in a pond. 5 fish died during fishing. How many fish are alive in the pond?
    Answer:
    7 – 5 = 2
  1. Observe the picture and find the number of glasses of orange juice is over. If there are 9 glasses of orange juice initially.

9 – 4 = 5

Exercise
