Key Concepts

  • Tell time to the hour.
  • Tell time to the half hour.

Clock

  • In a clock, the shorter hand is called the hour hand.
  • The hour hand tells us what hour it is.
  • The long hand is called the minute hand
  • The minute hand points to the minute

A. Read time to the hour

  • When the minutes hand points to 12, we say o’clock

Example: The minutes hand is at 12 and the hours hand is at 3.

So, the time is 3 o’clock.

B. Digital clock

  • We can show time using a digital clock also.
  • The hours are written before the colon.
  • The minutes are written after the colon.

C. Time to the half hour

  • When the minute hand is on 6, we can say that 30 minutes or half past the hour.
  • Half an hour is equal to 30 minutes.

Exercise

  • Draw the hour and minute hands on the clock to show the time as 5 o’clock.
  • What is the time shown by the clock?
  • Draw the hands on the clock to represent the time shown on the digital clock.
  • Fill the missing terms of the pattern:
    3:00, 5:00, , 9:00, .
  • If the time is as shown, between which numbers does the hour hand lie?
