Parts of Speech
Parts of speech shows the different roles or the functions of words in a sentence.
There are eight parts of speech in English.
They are:
- Noun
- Pronoun
- Verb
- Adjective
- Adverb
- Preposition
- Conjunction
- Interjection
Noun
A noun is a naming word. It is a place, person or thing.
For example: chair, California, John, dogs
- John is from Brazil.
John and Brazil are nouns.
Pronoun
A word replacing a noun to avoid repetition is called a pronoun.
For example: I, you, we, he, she, it, they
- Robert is sick. He went to the doctor.
“He” is the pronoun. “He” is used instead of Robert.
Verb
Verbs are action words.
Verbs show what someone does.
For example: walk, see, think
- My mother makes tasty pancakes.
Here, makes is the action. It is the verb.
Adjective
An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.
For example: good, bad, green, tall, short
- This is a beautiful garden.
Here, “beautiful” describes the noun, garden.
