What are Odd Words?

A word that does not belong to a group is called Odd Word.

  • The Odd Word Out exercise can help us identify our command over the English language.
  • Here, we are testing our deductive reasoning abilities.
  • Through the Odd Word Out exercise, we evaluate our logical thinking since we have to identify synonyms and similar words.
  • The method is to check each word in a given list.
  • Then, choose the one that does not fit in with the other words in terms of common features.
  • The list could have words on parts of speech, comparable functions, similar traits, or similar meanings.
  • It could be words that rhyme, with other odd being non-rhyming words.
  • Find the common feature.

Example

  • All the words start with the letter “f”)
  • All the words are synonyms except for one word, which is an antonym.
  • Do these words have the same meanings?
  • Do these terms belong to the same vocabulary category: fruits, cars, or plants?
  • Do the words rhyme?
  • Does each word in this list start with the same letter?
  • Do these words correspond to a particular speech component?
  • Now you can find the one that does not belong in the group as others share a common feature that this one does not have.
  1. Snake
  2. Lizard
  3. Turtle
  4. Whale

Which Is the One That Does Not Belong to That Group?

Solution:

Snakes, Lizard, Turtle, and Whale all come under the animal category.

parallel

But snakes, lizards, and turtles belong to the reptile group of animals, whereas a whale is a mammal.

Thus, the whale is different from the other three.

Hence, the whale is the odd one.
